CARCINOMA OF LARYNX

Carcinoma of the larynx is one of the most important and common malignancy of head and neck.

Aetiology:
  1. Age: Usually Occurs 40 to 70 years of age.
  2. Sex: More common in males due to smoking and tobacco habits. Laryngeal cancer is the eleventh most common cancer in men worldwide.
  3. Incidence: High in India, Hongkong, Europe, low in Japan, Norway, Sweden.
Predisposing factors:
  1. Smoking- commonest cause.
  2. Tobacco chewing. 
  3. Alcohol.
  4. Radiation.  
  5. Occupational like asbestos exposure.
  • 6. Genetic susceptibility.
  • 7. Laryngeal papillomas.
  • 8. Leucoplakia.
Symptoms:
  1. Hoarseness of voice is the commonest symptom.
  2. Stridor, cough, haemoptysis.
  3. Neck swelling.
  4. Dysphagia (Pyriform fossa and post cricoid involvement).
Treatment

The treatment for laryngeal cancer largely depends on the stage of the cancer. The main treatments are radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy.
